Brief One - Contemporary Group Dance
You will learn a contemporary sequence taught to you by a year 12 student/s which requires you to understand and convey an idea, mood, feeling or image related to a specific topic.
To achieve Excellence, your performance should clearly demonstrate that you have rehearsed and remembered the dance sequence accurately. Your movements should be clear and controlled.
You will also need to show control and accuracy through the following key features of contemporary dance:
- Moving through different levels on a range of body bases with ease and flow
- Clear sense of weight, gravity and suspension
- Safely bearing weight on body parts other than feet
- Use of momentum
- Use of space – fulfilling the movements
- Moving from the centre - torso open
- Extension of the arms, legs and spine
- Clearly directed focus - out into the distance, following your hands
Although you will be performing with a group, you will be assessed individually. You will have eight lessons to learn, rehearse, and perform this dance for assessment.
Assessment:
Your performance will be assessed in normal class time Term 1, Week 9 in the Dance room. For rehearsals and the assessment you will need to wear appropriate Dance clothing and bare feet. Do not wear anything that you have to adjust or pull on during performance.
Your performance will be videoed for moderation purposes.

2) Did you perform the dance accurately (this means as it was taught to you without making any mistakes) and as it was rehearsed during class sessions with your student choreographers? Comment on anything you felt you may have not performed as rehearsed. Why might this have been?
3) Where you pleased with your final group choreography? Why or Why Not?
4) Comment on your use of the following Contemporary Dance techniques in your performance:
- Moving through different levels on a range of body bases with ease and flow
- Clear sense of weight, gravity and suspension
- Safely bearing weight on body parts other than feet
- Use of momentum
- Use of space – fulfilling the movements
- Moving from the centre - torso open

6) In preparation for the next performance assessment what could you do to improve your assessment result?
Brief Two: Bharata Natyam Dance
You will learn and perform a Group Bharata Natyam Dance taught to you by a guest tutor from the community. The sequence will include a variety of movements, shapes, and rhythms from Indian classical dance, and it will be at least 1-2 minutes long.
The musical accompaniment will be pre-recorded music. The live percussion produced by your performance of traditional foot rhythms will enhance this.
Although you will perform in a group, you will be assessed as an individual. Attention to detail of your hands, face, and feet is important. Feet, hands, and eyes need to be shown clearly.
Your movements will need to be clear and you will need to show control and accuracy of the following features:
- clear and well-defined hand gestures and shapes
- correct postural stance, i.e. an upright back, grounded bent legs, relaxed feet
- foot rhythms, at two different speeds
- co-ordinated flow and agility of the face, hands, body alignment, and foot rhythms
- horizontal and vertical movements of the eyes without moving the head, to enhance the story-telling aspects of the dance
- calm, composed concentration should be shown during the slow moments; bright and alert
- concentration during the fast moments.
Your performance will be assessed in normal class time in Term Two, Week 4 in the Dance classroom and perform and again at a live performance on the 25th May at the Senior Dance Showcase.
For the assessment you will need gather an appropriate costume (e.g. skirt, blouse, scarf, and bindis).
