Achievement Standard 91206 (2.2): Choreograph a solo dance to communicate an intention - 4 Credits

The achievement standard for this standard is available for you to view at this link and the student instructions can be downloaded here for you to save or print.

Your teacher will read through these with you to ensure you are clear on what the standard expects of you but you also need to refer to them regularly throughout the course of the teaching and learning to ensure you have completed all the tasks required.

Intro Task:
The paintings for selection are all available in the following powerpoint presentation.  Once you have familiarised yourself with the standard and the requirements your teacher will talk through the paintings with you.

You will need to choose one you are interested in exploring to develop a concept for.

Task One:
After discussing your concept with your teacher, post your chosen picture and choreographic intention to your 2.2 blog page.

Task Two:
  • Read through the following handout and the student resource in the instruction sheet to assist you with the start of the choreographic process in developing your motifs.
  • Share these with your teacher and the class for feedback

Task Three:
Over the next 3 weeks you will:

  • Develop and explore movement ideas using improvisation, explore possible movement that might present your intention, Use ideas and aspects of the painting to assist you with this.  Ensure you develop a motif that encapsulates your understanding of the main idea of the painting.
  • Develop phrases by manipulating the dance elements and choreographic devices.
  • Select movement ideas and structure your dance
  • Choreograph and refine your movement sequences and phrases to structure the dance.
  • Refine and rehearse your ideas (As you work through this process, continually ask yourself if your dance fully communicates your intention)
  • Present your choreographed dance for assessment

Task Four:

When you have fully developed your choreography ensure you reshape your intention for the teacher to mark.  It must include:
  • The chosen painting as an image
  • The title of the painting you based your choreography on
  • A written statement that describes your intention (the idea you intended to convey). Support your points where possible with evidence clarify your choreographic ideas to assist the assessor.
Some Ideas include:
  • Describing your selection of unusual movement material to assist in making your choreography imaginative
  • Consideration of building the dance to a climax
  • Use of motif and development while keeping a sense of unity (include photographs of your motifs where possible)
  • Description of your  overall structure (e.g. AB to clearly convey the contrasting tones in the painting)
  • Movements and phrases that may build to a climax to emphasise the intention
  • Justification of your piece of music and why it enhances the way your choreographed dance presents your intention.
FINAL REFLECTION:
Your Solo clips are available to view and download at this link

Please download the video and load to your 2.2 Blog page with a reflection on the following:

1) Where you pleased with your final group choreography? Why or Why Not?

2) How well do you think your choreography met the requirements of the brief (check the task sheet)? Did you dance clearly conveyed your chosen Artwork and the initial brainstormed ideas/concept/intention you submitted?

4) What have you learnt about choreography this term?

5) Looking at the assessment schedule what would you award your choreography if you were marking it? Why?

6) If you were to give any words of wisdom to the year 12's of 2016 about choreography at NCEA what would they be?
